Week 1: Flip Flop Hop Table Runner Quilt Along - Tour de Fabric

It's finally here! Welcome to Week 1 of the Flip Flop Hop Table Runner Quilt Along! This week we'll get our supplies together and cut our fabrics.

Here's what supplies we'll need:

Fabric Requirements

Raid your scrap stash or fat quarters for the flip flop appliques!

  • 1/2 yard background fabric. I used white cotton fabric.
  • 6 - fat eighths or pieces of fabric minimum of 4" x 8" (10cm x 20xm) for flip flops applique pieces. I used colorful batiks.
  • 6 - 4" (10cm) squares of solid fabric to coordinate with flip flop fabric for the shoe straps.
  • 1/2" yard HeatnBond Lite Fabric Adhesive
  • 1 yard fabric for the inner border, backing, and binding.
  • Matching thread
  • 1 1/4 yard for backing fabric.
  • 1/4 yard for the binding fabric.
  • Quilt batting to fit project.

Project Prep

  • Cut your borders, center piece, and squares for the flip flop appliques to be ready for next week.
  • You can just cut the flip flop squares for now and iron on the HeatnBond fabric adhesive on the back. Don't peel off the paper for now. We'll trace the pattern on the paper backing next week.
  • We'll also cut the flip flop motifs next week. I'll share how to cut them by hand or with a die cutting machine.
  • Gather your other supplies - backing fabric, batting, and binding fabric.

Tips & Ideas:

  • Check your scrap stash for the 4"x8" pieces for the flip flop motifs and toe straps. I bet you have some great fabrics in there already!
  • I've opted for batiks for my project, but any summery print that make you think of flip flops or summer will work great.
  • Look for fabrics that contrast well together for the flip flop base and toe straps. I think a nice bit of color makes those toe straps pop nicely against the flop flop fabric.
